Soft Blow
51% Baby Suri Alpaca
49% Peruvian Pima Cotton
300m per 100g

This yarn construction is a little different from my other qualities - it consists of a knitted cotton inner core with the softest baby alpaca. A so-called blow yarn. It gives an incredibly soft and airy knit with a slight "halo", but without too much fluff. What you knit with this soft yarn is amazing - almost like a wool spun texture, but still with the softness and warmth of the alpaca. The colors I can dye in this quality will always have the light yarn in the depth, which gives a beautiful mottling as the cotton is less susceptible to color.

More information

Soft Blow Alpaca Cotton Blend is a very special yarn from Fru Krogh—a so-called “blow yarn” with a unique construction that produces an incredibly soft and airy knit with a slight stretch in the stitches. The yarn is composed of 51% Baby Suri Alpaca and 49% Peruvian Pima Cotton, and its special construction—a knitted cotton core blended with the softest baby alpaca—makes it something entirely different from traditional alpaca yarn.

The construction gives the stitch a slight “elastic” feel, but without the tightness that elastic can otherwise create. This makes the yarn perfect for sweaters, cardigans, and light summer knits that need both texture and drape. It is hand-dyed in Fru Krogh’s own colors and is therefore a limited edition—no two skeins are alike.

Needle Size and Stitch Pattern—My Personal Experiences

Spinderiet recommends needles sizes 5.0–7.0, but I actually disagree when it comes to my own projects. This yarn produces a dense and attractive stitch pattern on needles sizes 3.5–5.0. On larger needles, stockinette stitch results in a very open stitch pattern—if you’re knitting with needles larger than 5.0, I recommend using a companion thread or a textured stitch pattern.

Here are my own gauge swatches to use as a guide—remember to adjust them based on your personal knitting style:

  • Needle size 3.5: 18.5 stitches per 10 cm (the yarn label says 21 stitches)
  • Needle size 4.0: 17 stitches per 10 cm
  • Needle size 5.0: 15.5 stitches per 10 cm
  • Needle size 6.0: 13.5 stitches per 10 cm
  • Needle size 7.0: 12.5 stitches per 10 cm

What makes the Soft Blow alpaca-cotton blend special?

It’s the yarn’s construction that sets it apart. The cotton core provides stability and a crisp drape, while the baby suri alpaca envelops it with its characteristic softness and subtle sheen. The result is a yarn that feels light and airy to knit with, yet has more body than pure alpaca. It’s perfect for projects where you want a knit with a light texture and natural drape.

The combination of alpaca and cotton makes this a great choice for spring and summer knits—it’s not as warm as pure wool, but it’s still soft and comfortable against the skin.
